Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School

Our Name

"A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches" Proverbs 22:1

For us, our new Catholic primary school began to come to life in late September 2008, when a group of interested people volunteered to join together and begin the journey as the Establishment Committee, to become the school Board of Trustees upon the signing of the Integration Act. The school is integrated on the day the school opens its doors to our community of precious children and their families.

Most of the members of our Establishment Committee, at this early stage, had strong connections with St Luke’s Catholic Community, Flat Bush and or links with Sancta Maria College, with whom the new primary school shares the Catholic Campus.

It is a surprise for most people to discover that as our school began its growth and the life began to breathe into it, we did not yet have a name for our school. There was careful and considered thought, prayer and discussion around this and it soon became clear that the team were united in their hopes and dreams for the new Catholic primary school.

Deep in the heart of each member of the Establishment Committee was the strong desire for our beautiful school to be a nurturing, gentle and caring environment. We were passionate about the wish for our school community to love, cherish and grow our children, accept them as sacred, in the image of God and love them as individuals.

As people of the local area, we recognised the demographics of Flat Bush and with this in mind we were hopeful that our new school would be a welcoming and secure, homely place for each member of its community to become settled and feel safe.

With our hopes and desires shared it was our devoted wish for our new Catholic primary school to fulfil its important mission in the honour of Holy Mary Mother of God. Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School was born.

The name Sancta Maria is Latin for Mary mother of God. It means Holy Mary. The important name of our school is much more than a label and it is extremely significant.

Our name represents all of the historical biblical connections of Sancta Maria, mother of God and her faithful relationship with her beloved Son. The name of our school and the dear, Holy woman from whom the name derives, is crucial for us to consider in everything we think, believe, carry out and accomplish in the journey of our school.

In the New Testament Mary is present at almost every major event in the life of Jesus:

Sancta Maria is with us in name and she is also with us, as her beautiful and immaculate spirit fills and permeates through our school, guiding and nourishing us on our journey, as she walks with us to God.
