Welcome to Room 6

February 2012

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome to all the Room 6 children and parents for 2012.  This is going to be an exciting year and I know all my parents will support their children with their homework.

In Term 1 we will be promoting the virtues of Gentleness, Integrity, Humility,         and Peacefulness.  We will be learning how to care about each other and treat people with dignity.  The Religious Education programme will include learning prayers, Lent, the Jesus Strand and Holy Week.

This term the Topic we will be studying in Inquiry Learning is: Everything is possible with God.  Mark 10:27.  We will be learning about Recount Writing and Character Descriptions in Written Language and Number, Basic Facts, Multiplication and Division and Measurement in Mathematics.

We will be covering Athletics and Ball Skills in Physical Education.  The children should bring their sports uniform on Monday and I will send them home for washing on Fridays.

For successful learning your child needs a nutritious and healthy morning tea and lunch every day.  This could include sandwiches, rice, yoghurt, fruit, nuts, cheese, muesli bars and a bottle of water.  Please support us by giving your child enough sandwiches or rice for both morning tea and lunch.  They should not bring more than one 'packet' type of snack food or drinks that are highly coloured as these are full with sugar and preservatives.

Homework for Room 6 children will include their instructional Reading book, discussion about the story and retelling parts of the story.  The children may bring the same book home over several days; this reading of familiar books helps them learn many different reading skills. In Maths we will be learning about oral counting, becoming familiar with numbers e.g. the numbers before and after a given number, counting forwards and backwards to 100 in 2s, 5s and 10s. We highly recommend the Mathletics programme to be used daily at home.

A Spelling list will be given out on Mondays, there will be an emphasis on listening for sounds in words and letters used to write these sounds.  The children are expected to learn these words during the week and write the words in a sentence. All children will have a turn to take part in our VIP Oral Language programme, the details are given on a separate sheet. Your child will be informed when his/her turn comes.  Further details will be sent home in the Homework Book.  Please remind your child to bring this to school everyday in their Book Bag.

Please send an old shirt (named) for the children to use over their clothes while doing Artwork, this will help protect their uniform.

Please send in a family photo, named on the back.  We will be using these as part of our school programme and they will be returned later in the year.

Family/Whanau Book

We sell the Family/Whanau book at the office.  This is an excellent resource to help you to support your child throughout their Year 1-8 Religious Education journey.  Only one copy per family is required.  Please speak to either Mrs Boyle or Mrs James at the office should you need to purchase this.

If you have any enquiries, please feel welcome to visit the classroom before or after school.  Alternatively, you can email me on bronwenm@sanctamariaprimary.school.nz.  It is important that we communicate regarding your child's learning so as to achieve better results while 'Growing in Faith Together'.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you.
