Welcome to Room 3

7th  February 2012

Dear Parents and Caregivers

A very warm welcome to the children of Room 3 and their whanau for 2012. I am excited as I look forward to getting to know your child. My aim is to ensure that your child enjoys learning and grows in the virtues of Gentleness, Integrity, Humility and Peacefulness which will be developed through the classroom programme. I look forward to your support in achieving this.

Our Topics for Term 1 are :

Religious Education :, Prayers, Jesus Strand, Lent, Holy Week, Easter

We sell the Family/Whanau book at the office. This is an excellent resource to help you to support your child throughout their Year 1 – 8 Religious Education journey. Only 1 copy per family is required. Please speak to either Mrs Boyle or Mrs James at the office should you need to purchase this.

English : Recount writing, Descriptive writing

Mathematics : Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Measurement

Your child will be using Mathletics as part of their learning during Maths in the classroom. Signing up for Mathletics allows your child to 24 hour access from home as well as school. The activities are designed to challenge and support your child in all areas of Maths.

Reading : Please take 10- 15 minutes daily to read to/with your child. Reading at home provides an opportunity for children to practise the reading strategies that they are learning at school.  Books that are sent home need to be brought back each day in your child's book bag. Your child may bring the same book home over several days as, reading familiar books helps children to consolidate reading skills. You could discuss parts of the story, the characters or new words and their meanings and/or encourage them to re-tell parts of the story.

Handwriting : Emphasis on the correct formation of letters and correct pencil grip.

Inquiry Learning : All things are possible with God, Term 1  focus – Mission and Community

Physical Education : Athletics and Ball Skills, Jump Jam

The Arts : Drawing, Shading, Use of different art pencils

Maori – Greetings, Classroom commands, Vowel sounds

Physical Education : Our P.E days are Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that your child's P.E. uniform is labelled and in their bags on these days.

Swimming : Children will be taken to the Swimming Pool every Monday at 9.00 am starting from 13th February – 27th March. Please ensure that your child has swimming togs and a towel on these days. All items must be clearly labelled.

Spelling : There will be an emphasis on listening for sounds in words and letters used to write these sounds.

Library : Our Library day is Friday. Please return library books each week so that a new book can be issued.

Every effort will be made to ensure that all children are given equal opportunities to participate at various events held during the academic year

If there is anything you need to discuss, please feel free to contact me between 8.30 and 8.50 a.m. in the classroom. If you wish to speak to me after school please contact me to arrange a time. Alternatively, you can email me on beverleyd@sanctamariaprimary.school.nz.  It is important that we communicate regarding your child's learning so as to achieve better results while 'growing in faith together.
